Setting up the Paper Pro is straightforward, with two things that differ from a normal e-reader: an account is essentially required, and there is an optional paid subscription (Connect) for the fuller cloud and integration features. The device is fully usable without the subscription — it mainly changes how much the apps and cloud sync can do.

  1. Charge the Paper Pro before setup

A new device often ships part-charged, and setup includes a software update. Plug it in with the supplied USB-C cable and give it time on the charger before you start. The battery is large, so a full charge takes a while.

  2. Turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and create a reMarkable account

Press the power button on the top edge. Choose your language, connect to Wi-Fi, and create or sign in to a reMarkable account. Unlike a Kindle or Kobo, an account is effectively required — it is how the device syncs and how the apps connect.

  3. Understand the reMarkable Connect subscription

The device works without a subscription for on-device writing and reading. A paid "reMarkable Connect" plan adds unlimited cloud sync history, the mobile and desktop apps' full features, handwriting-to-text in more places, and integrations with Google Drive, Dropbox and OneNote. New devices usually include a free trial. Decide later; nothing is lost by skipping it at first.

  4. Let the software update install

The Paper Pro checks for and installs the latest firmware and restarts. Updates regularly add note-taking features, so keep automatic updates on unless you are running community modifications.

  5. Pair and check the Marker

The Marker is battery-free and pairs the first time you touch it to the screen. It attaches magnetically to the right edge. If you have the Marker Plus, the top end is an eraser. Open the built-in "Quick sheets" or a new notebook to try it.

  6. Install the desktop and mobile apps

On your computer and phone, install the reMarkable app and sign in with the same account. The desktop app is the main way to move PDFs onto the device; the mobile app is handy for sending a document you have on your phone and for reading your notes elsewhere.

  7. Set the front light and handedness

Swipe down from the top for quick settings, including the front light (brightness and warm tone). In Settings, set your writing hand so the toolbar and palm rejection sit on the correct side.
