Setting up a reMarkable 2 is like any reMarkable: an account is essentially required, and there is an optional paid subscription (Connect) for the fuller cloud features. The one extra step, since most reMarkable 2s sold now are used or refurbished, is confirming the device is factory reset and removed from the previous owner’s account before you sign in.

  1. On a used unit, confirm it is deregistered and reset

If you bought the reMarkable 2 secondhand, it should arrive factory reset and removed from the previous owner's account. If it boots straight into someone's notebooks, ask them to remove it from their account at my.remarkable.com, then factory reset it from Settings, then "General", then "Storage" (or "Reset"). A device still tied to another account cannot sync to yours.

  2. Charge it before setup

Plug it in with a USB-C cable and give it time on the charger. The battery is large; a full charge takes a while, and a used unit may arrive nearly empty.

  3. Turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and sign in to a reMarkable account

Press the power button on the top edge. Choose your language, connect to Wi-Fi, and create or sign in to a reMarkable account. An account is effectively required — it is how the device syncs and how the apps connect.

  4. Understand the reMarkable Connect subscription

The device works without a subscription for on-device writing and reading. A paid "reMarkable Connect" plan adds unlimited cloud sync history, the mobile and desktop apps' full features, handwriting-to-text in more places, and integrations with Google Drive, Dropbox and OneNote. A used device may or may not still have a trial available. Decide later; nothing is lost by skipping it.

  5. Let the software update install

The reMarkable 2 still receives updates even though it is no longer sold new. Install what is offered and let it restart — unless you plan to run community software such as KOReader, in which case check the community's guidance on which firmware to stay on first.

  6. Pair and check the Marker

The Marker is battery-free and pairs the first time you touch it to the screen. It attaches magnetically to the right edge. The reMarkable 2 uses its own generation of Marker and Marker Plus — the Paper Pro's newer pens do not work on it, and vice versa. On a used unit, check the tip is not worn flat.

  7. There is no front light

The reMarkable 2 has no front light. Plan to use it in ambient light, or add a clip-on reading light for low-light use.

  8. Install the desktop and mobile apps and set handedness

Install the reMarkable app on your computer and phone and sign in with the same account — the desktop app is the main way to move PDFs across. In Settings, set your writing hand so the toolbar and palm rejection sit on the correct side.
