Two bottom buttons with a short and long press each give you four actions. On the InkPad Color 3 the standout long-press choices are the colour / black-and-white toggle and a manual screen refresh — together they let you move between a sharp mono novel and a colour comic without ever opening a menu.

  1. Open the key-mapping settings

From the home screen, open Settings, then "Personalize", then "Key mapping" (on some firmware it is under "Reading settings"). You will see a list of the physical controls the InkPad Color 3 has.

  2. Understand short press and long press

Each of the two bottom page-turn buttons has two actions you can set separately — a short press and a long press (holding the button for about a second). That gives you four assignable actions from two buttons.

  3. Set the short presses for turning pages

Most people leave short press on the right button as "Next page" and the left as "Previous page". Swap them if you prefer, or if you usually hold the device in one particular hand.

  4. Put the colour toggle and screen refresh on long press

This is the device where the long presses earn their keep. Assign one to the colour / black-and-white toggle so you can drop to sharp mono for a novel and back to colour for a comic without opening a menu, and the other to "Screen refresh" to clear ghosting on a busy colour page.

  5. Save and test

The changes take effect immediately. Open a colour book and a plain one and confirm the toggle and refresh do what you expect. KOReader keeps its own separate mapping if you run it.

  6. Note the other options

"Add bookmark", "Dictionary", "Rotate" and "Table of contents" are also available if you would rather use a long press for one of those.
