The Kindle Scribe pen isn't writing or is lagging

The pen makes no mark, skips, lags behind your hand, or the eraser and shortcut button do nothing. Most cases are a worn tip, a software hang, or a setting.

Symptoms

  • The pen makes no mark on the screen at all.
  • Lines skip, break up, or only register when you press hard.
  • The ink appears a moment behind the pen tip.
  • The Premium Pen eraser or the barrel shortcut button does nothing.

Before you start

  • Check whether the pen has a spare tip and the tip-removal tool that came in the box.
  • Note whether the problem is everywhere or only in one notebook or PDF.
  • None of these steps erase notebooks or books.

Which fix do you need?

Most common cause

The most common cause of skipping or "press hard to write" is a worn pen tip — they are consumable and last a few months of regular use. The most common cause of no marks at all, or lag, is a software hang that a restart clears. The eraser and shortcut button not working is usually a settings or firmware issue.

Fixes

Fix 1 Restart the Scribe and re-pair the pen

A pen that suddenly makes no marks, or writes with lag, is almost always a software hang rather than a hardware fault. A restart clears it, and re-touching the pen re-establishes the pairing.

  1. Restart the Scribe from Settings, then Device Options, then Restart. If the screen is unresponsive, hold the power button for about 40 seconds until it restarts on its own.
  2. After it boots, open the built-in tutorial notebook or a new notebook and touch the pen to the screen. It re-pairs automatically.
  3. Try writing near the centre of the screen first. If the centre works but the edges do not, the problem is likely the tip (Fix 2), not the software.
  4. If there is still no response anywhere, try the spare tip from the box in case the fitted one is damaged, then move to Fix 2.

Fix 2 Replace the pen tip

Pen tips are a wear part. As one flattens it stops making reliable contact, which shows up as skipping, broken lines, or needing to bear down. A fresh tip usually fixes it completely.

  1. Use the small tip-removal tool from the box (or fine tweezers) to grip the tip and pull it straight out. It comes out with a firm, even pull.
  2. Push a new tip straight in until it seats. It should sit flush and not wobble.
  3. Test on a notebook page. Writing should feel light again and lines should be unbroken.
  4. Order more tips when you are down to your last one. Amazon and third parties sell tip packs; the Premium and Basic pens use the same tips.

Fix 3 Fix the eraser or shortcut button

The eraser end and the barrel shortcut button are only on the Premium Pen, and both are controlled in settings. If they stopped working, it is usually a setting or a firmware bug rather than the pen.

  1. Confirm you have the Premium Pen — it has a flat eraser end and a button on the barrel. The Basic Pen has neither, so there is nothing to fix.
  2. Open Settings, then "Pen", and check the shortcut button is assigned to an action such as "Eraser" or "Highlighter" and is not set to "Off".
  3. Make sure the Scribe firmware is current, from Settings, then Device Options, then Software Updates. Eraser and button behaviour has been fixed in past updates.
  4. Restart the Scribe. If the eraser still does nothing after a restart and a firmware check, contact Amazon — a pen with a dead eraser is usually replaced under warranty.

Undo / recovery

None of these steps touch your content. If a restart or tip change does not help and the pen still will not write anywhere, the pen or the digitiser may be faulty; the pen is covered by the Scribe's warranty and Amazon replaces it readily.

If the pen skips or needs pressure, replace the tip first — it is the answer most of the time and takes a minute. If it makes no marks at all or lags, restart the Scribe before assuming anything is broken.
