Set up a new BOOX Note Air 4 C
Take a new Note Air 4 C from the box to a working colour Android e-ink tablet — Wi-Fi, the optional BOOX account, Google sign-in, the Play Store and the pen.
Setting up the Note Air 4 C is a normal Android first-run with two extra steps: enabling the Google Play Store, which BOOX ships switched off, and setting up the pen. Once Google is signed in the device behaves like any Android tablet that happens to have a colour e-ink screen. The BOOX account is optional but more useful here than on a plain reader, because it syncs your notebooks.
-
Charge the Note Air 4 C before setup
A new device often ships part-charged, and setup includes a system update. Plug it in with the supplied USB-C cable and give it time on the charger before you start.
-
Turn it on and connect to Wi-Fi
Press the power button on the top edge. Choose your language and time zone, then your Wi-Fi network and enter the password. The device needs Wi-Fi to update and to reach the Play Store.
-
Install any firmware update
Open Settings, then "Firmware Update", and apply anything offered. BOOX updates regularly, and the updates improve both how Android apps render on e-ink and how the pen behaves, so it is worth doing now.
-
Decide about a BOOX account
A BOOX (Onyx) account is used for the BOOX cloud — syncing notebooks, the reading position in the stock NeoReader app, and configuration backups across BOOX devices. On a note tablet the notebook sync is the main reason to sign in. It is still optional; you can also export notes as PDF instead.
-
Turn on the Google Play Store
Open the Apps screen and find "Play Store". On first launch, BOOX shows a screen to "enable Google Play"; tap through it, wait a minute or two while it registers the device with Google, then restart the device if prompted. Once done, sign in with your Google account.
-
Pair and set up the pen
The pen needs no charging or battery. Touch it to the screen and it works. In Settings, open the pen or handwriting section to set pressure, choose whether the side button erases, and calibrate if the ink lands slightly off the tip.
-
Learn the control centre
Swipe down from the top-right for the BOOX control centre — refresh-mode buttons, a colour/black-and-white toggle, front-light sliders (brightness and warm tone), and a full-screen refresh button that clears ghosting.
-
Set a comfortable default refresh mode
In the control centre, the global refresh mode is usually best on "Balanced" or "Regal" for reading. "HD" is sharpest but slowest; the faster modes are for scrolling and menus. Per-app settings override this, covered in a later guide.
