The Note Air 4 C’s note-taking is genuinely good for meetings, margins and PDF markup, with a large screen and a lag-free pen. It sits between the Kindle Scribe and the reMarkable in polish, but beats both on openness: notes export as PDF or text and you can copy the files off over USB, and you can run a third-party note app if you prefer. The main limits are that the working notebook format is BOOX’s own and the template set, while large, is fixed.

  1. Make a notebook in BOOX Notes

Open the Notes app, tap to create a notebook, name it and pick a template — plain, lined, several grid and dot spacings, planners, Cornell, music staves and more. Different pages in one notebook can use different templates, and you can change a template later.

  2. Learn the pen tools

The toolbar has pen, pencil, brush, highlighter and eraser, each with several widths, plus shape tools, a lasso to move or resize handwriting, undo and redo, and layers. Colours are available and show as muted tones on the Kaleido screen. The pen's side button can be set to erase.

  3. Write on a PDF or a book page

Open a PDF in NeoReader and use the pen straight on the page — the marks are saved into a layer you can show or hide, and they stay at that spot. For reflowable EPUBs, the writing attaches to a location and moves with the text if you change the font size. You can also drop a collapsible sticky note.

  4. Convert handwriting to text

In a notebook, use the "convert to text" option (whole page or lasso a selection). The device turns tidy handwriting into typed text you can copy or export. Printing converts better than fast cursive; several languages are supported.

  5. Get notes off the device

From a notebook's menu, export as PDF (handwriting as-is) or as text, to local storage, the BOOX cloud, or a linked third-party cloud. Unlike a closed device, you can also just connect USB and copy the exported files off. The working notebook format itself is BOOX's own.

  6. Consider a third-party notes app

Because it is Android, you can install OneNote, Xodo, or a dedicated note app from the Play Store and write with the pen in those. They lack BOOX's e-ink pen tuning, so BOOX Notes is usually smoother, but a third-party app is the way to keep notes in a system you already use.

  7. Know the limits

You cannot import your own page templates as first-class templates (send them as a PDF and write on that instead). Handwriting search inside notebooks is limited. Colour on the page is muted — do not expect screen-accurate highlighter shades.
