Set up a new reMarkable Paper Pure
Register a new Paper Pure, understand the reMarkable Connect subscription, pair the Marker, and set up the desktop and mobile apps.
Setting up the Paper Pure is straightforward, with two things that differ from a normal e-reader: an account is essentially required, and there is an optional paid subscription (Connect) for the fuller cloud and integration features. The one hardware fact to absorb is that there is no front light — the Paper Pure is a deliberately plain, reflective writing surface.
-
Charge the Paper Pure before setup
A new device often ships part-charged, and setup includes a software update. Plug it in with the supplied USB-C cable and give it time on the charger. The battery is large — reMarkable rates it for weeks of use — so a full charge takes a while.
-
Turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and create a reMarkable account
Press the power button on the top edge. Choose your language, connect to Wi-Fi, and create or sign in to a reMarkable account. Unlike a Kindle or Kobo, an account is effectively required — it is how the device syncs and how the apps connect.
-
Understand the reMarkable Connect subscription
The device works without a subscription for on-device writing and reading. A paid "reMarkable Connect" plan adds unlimited cloud sync history, the mobile and desktop apps' full features, handwriting-to-text in more places, and integrations with Google Drive, Dropbox and OneNote. New devices usually include a free trial. Decide later; nothing is lost by skipping it at first.
-
Let the software update install
The Paper Pure checks for and installs the latest firmware and restarts. Updates regularly add note-taking features, so keep automatic updates on unless you are running community modifications.
-
Pair and check the Marker
The Marker is battery-free and pairs the first time you touch it to the screen. It attaches magnetically to the right edge, which also charges the current-generation Marker wirelessly. The Paper Pure does not work with the reMarkable 2's older pens. If you have the Marker Plus, the top end is an eraser.
-
There is no front light — set expectations
Unlike the Paper Pro, the Paper Pure has no front light at all. It is a pure reflective screen, like a paper notebook or a basic Kindle from years ago. Plan to use it in ambient light, and consider a clip-on light if you write in bed.
-
Install the desktop and mobile apps
On your computer and phone, install the reMarkable app and sign in with the same account. The desktop app is the main way to move PDFs onto the device; the mobile app is handy for sending a document from your phone and for reading your notes elsewhere.
-
Set handedness
In Settings, set your writing hand so the floating toolbar and palm rejection sit on the correct side. Left-handed users should do this first — the defaults assume right.
