reMarkable Paper Pro

Comparisons

How this device stacks up against the alternatives.

The Paper Pro is the most focused writing device here: a large screen, colour, a front light, the Marker, deep note tools, and open export. It is a poor ebook reader by comparison, and some cloud features need a subscription.

  • Kindle Scribe. The Paper Pro’s direct rival. The Scribe is also a full Kindle, so it reads Amazon books well and its note-taking is strong. The Paper Pro has a bigger screen, more paper-like writing, colour, deeper note organisation, and open export (PDF, PNG). Choose the Scribe if you want one device for Kindle books and notes; choose the Paper Pro if writing is the point and you accept a weak reader.
  • BOOX Go Color 7. A small Android tablet that runs any app, including good note apps and every reading app. Far more flexible and a much better ebook reader, but a smaller screen, shorter battery life, and note-taking that is app-dependent rather than a designed whole. Choose the BOOX for flexibility; choose the Paper Pro for a large, single-purpose writing surface.
  • Kobo Libra Colour. Included as the “do you even need a big writing device” check. It is a proper 7-inch e-reader with light stylus notes, waterproof, in an open ecosystem, at a fraction of the price and weight. If your writing needs are light, this does both jobs adequately for far less.
