Notebooks and handwriting conversion on the reMarkable Paper Pro Move
How the Move's notebooks, colour pens, layers, handwriting-to-text conversion, and export to PDF and email work on the small screen, and where the limits are.
The Move’s note-taking is the full reMarkable feature set — a wide range of pens, layers, colour, per-page templates, and reliable handwriting-to-text if you print rather than scrawl — on a screen small enough to hold in one hand. The main adjustments for the size are using the wider-spaced templates and zooming in to write on PDFs. Organisation is down to you, so use folders and tags early.
-
Create a notebook and pick a template
From the library, create a new notebook. Choose a template — plain, lined, dotted, grid, planners and many more. On a 7.3-inch page the wider-spaced lined and dotted templates are more comfortable than the dense ones. Each page can use its own template.
-
Learn the writing tools, colour and layers
The toolbar has several pens (ballpoint, fineliner, marker, pencil, calligraphy, brush), a highlighter, an eraser, and a selection tool for moving, resizing and cutting handwriting. The Move's Gallery 3 screen shows a wide colour range, so coloured pens and highlighters look close to what you would expect on paper. Layers let you keep, for example, a diagram separate from your annotations of it.
-
Write on an imported PDF
Open a PDF and write directly on it. Your marks are stored as an annotation layer over the original, so the source page is never altered. You can add pages to a PDF for extra working space. On the small screen, zoom in to write neatly, then zoom out to see the whole page.
-
Convert handwriting to text
In a notebook, open the page menu and choose "Convert to text", or select handwriting with the selection tool and convert just that. The result can be emailed or copied. Accuracy is good with clear printing and drops with fast cursive; it supports many languages, set per notebook.
-
Organise with folders and tags
The library uses folders, and you can add tags to notebooks and to individual pages, then filter by tag. A pocket device fills with quick notes fast, so tag as you go.
-
Export a notebook or annotated PDF
From a notebook or document menu, choose to email it, or export it as PDF or PNG. Colour is preserved in the export. With the desktop and mobile apps you can also open your notes there.
-
Know what it does not do
There is no app store and no third-party apps in the normal software. You cannot import notes from another brand of tablet directly. Full-text search of handwriting is limited. And everything lives in reMarkable's system — you export to PDF or text; there is no open notebook file without developer mode.
