reMarkable 2
KOReader
Installing and living with the KOReader reading app.
The reMarkable 2’s stock EPUB reading is weak, and KOReader is the standard fix. Unlike a Kindle, no jailbreak exploit is needed — reMarkable includes a developer mode that gives you SSH access, and the community package manager Toltec installs KOReader over that connection. Because the reMarkable 2 has been out for years and its platform is stable, this is the most trodden, best-documented KOReader install of any device on this site.
Why do it
- A real ebook reader. Proper font, margin and layout control, library management, and formats beyond PDF and EPUB — CBZ, FB2, DjVu and more.
- Better PDF reflow than the stock reader for small-text documents.
- It runs alongside the stock software. A launcher lets you switch between KOReader and the reMarkable writing side; nothing is replaced.
- Big, stable community. Guides, launchers and helper tools are mature, and problems are well covered in forums.
Why you might not
- It is still advanced. You enable developer mode (which wipes the device), connect over SSH, and run command-line steps. A wrong move can require a reset.
- Firmware updates can break it. A reMarkable update may disable developer mode or remove Toltec’s changes; you re-run the install. Many people hold back updates while running it.
- No pen support. KOReader is a reading app — no handwriting, no notebooks.
- Warranty and support. reMarkable will not support a device with community software on it.
