The reMarkable 2 is the thin monochrome writing slate that defined the category. It is no longer sold new, but it is widely available refurbished and secondhand, still gets software updates, and has the most mature community-modification scene of any e-ink device. It is a poor ebook reader on the stock software — though KOReader fixes that better here than anywhere.

• reMarkable Paper Pure. The direct replacement. The writing experience is very close; the Paper Pure adds a faster processor, more storage, a bigger replaceable battery and a repairable design. The reMarkable 2’s edge is price (used) and its settled KOReader-through-Toltec setup. Buy the Paper Pure for a new device with a warranty; buy a used or refurbished reMarkable 2 to save money or for the rock-solid community tooling.
• Kindle Scribe. Also a 10-inch writing tablet, but a full Kindle with a front light, so it reads Amazon books well. Its notebooks are locked to Amazon’s system with email-only export. Choose the Scribe for Kindle reading plus notes; choose the reMarkable 2 for a more paper-like feel, open export, and the option to run KOReader.
• reMarkable Paper Pro. The current flagship: 11.8-inch, colour, front-lit, heavier and much pricier. Choose it if you want colour or the big lit screen; choose a reMarkable 2 if a plain, light, inexpensive monochrome writing slate is all you need.
