Read library books on the PocketBook Verse

The Verse is one of the few readers that opens Adobe-DRM library books without a computer. The routine is: authorise an Adobe ID on the device once, borrow the title as an Adobe EPUB, then move the small “.acsm” file to the Verse and open it there to pull down the book. If a loan will not open, it is nearly always an Adobe ID mismatch — the troubleshooting page walks through that.

  1. Understand why the Verse is good at this

Most public-library ebooks are EPUB or PDF files locked with Adobe DRM. A Kindle cannot open them at all; a Kobo can, through its own store integration. The Verse opens them the direct way — it has an Adobe DRM reader built in, so once it is authorised you can side-load a loan and read it with no computer in the loop.

  2. Authorise the Verse with an Adobe ID

Create a free Adobe account at adobe.com if you do not have one. On the Verse, open Settings, then "Accounts and Synchronization", then "Adobe DRM", and sign in. This is a one-time step. Use the same Adobe ID everywhere you read loans so books unlock on every device.

  3. Borrow the book

In the Libby app or on your library's OverDrive website, borrow the title. When it asks how to read it, choose the option for "another app" or "download EPUB" / "Adobe EPUB" rather than "Kindle" or "read in browser".

  4. Get the ".acsm" file

Downloading an Adobe loan gives you a small file ending in ".acsm". This is not the book — it is a ticket the reader exchanges for the book. Save it somewhere you can reach it: your computer's Downloads folder, or your phone.

  5. Copy the ".acsm" to the Verse and open it there

Connect the Verse by USB (or email the ".acsm" to your Send-to-PocketBook address) and copy the ".acsm" file into any folder. On the device, open it from the Library. With Adobe DRM authorised, the Verse contacts Adobe, downloads the real EPUB or PDF, and replaces the ".acsm" entry with the book.

  6. Return a loan early (optional)

Loans expire on their own and simply stop opening. To return one early and free up a hold slot, use the Libby app or the OverDrive website — the Verse itself does not have a "return" button for side-loaded loans.
