PocketBook Verse

Comparisons

How this device stacks up against the alternatives.

The Verse is the budget PocketBook. It keeps the brand’s strengths — buttons you can remap, a warm front light, a microSD slot, open format support and on-device Adobe-DRM library books — and drops audio, Bluetooth, waterproofing and the sharper 300-ppi screen.

  • PocketBook Verse Pro. The same body and software with a 300-ppi screen, IPX8 waterproofing, Bluetooth, text-to-speech and audiobook playback. If you want any of those, pay the difference for the Pro; if you only read text and keep the device at home, the Verse does the same core job for less.
  • Kobo Clara BW. The same 6-inch size and price bracket, but no buttons, no microSD, no waterproofing, and a closed format list — though Kobo’s store and software are more polished, and library books work through the built-in OverDrive integration rather than a manual Adobe step. Choose the Clara BW for the smoother store; choose the Verse for buttons, a card slot and format freedom.
  • Basic Kindle. Amazon’s cheapest reader, tied to the Kindle store, with no buttons and no support for library EPUBs at all. Choose it only if you buy from Amazon and want the simplest possible device.
