Kobo Sage

KOReader

Installing and living with the KOReader reading app.

KOReader is a separate reading application that runs on the Sage without removing anything. When you install it, the Kobo home screen gains a “KOReader” icon; tapping it starts KOReader, and closing it returns you to the normal Kobo interface (called Nickel).

Why put it on the Sage

  • Typography control — margins, line spacing, hyphenation and font-weight settings that Nickel keeps hidden, which help on the large 8-inch page.
  • PDF handling — KOReader’s reflow and crop tools are stronger than Kobo’s for documents, and the Sage’s screen is a good size for them.
  • Configurable buttons and gestures — every press and swipe can be assigned an action, which Kobo’s software does not allow.
  • One setup across devices, with a synced reading position.

What you give up inside KOReader

The Kobo store, OverDrive borrowing, Bluetooth audiobooks, and — importantly for the Sage — the stylus and notebooks do not work in KOReader. KOReader has no handwriting support. If you switch to KOReader for reading, you switch back to Nickel to take notes.
