The Clara BW’s pitch is simple: the smallest, cheapest current Kobo, with a modern screen and warm light, and an open ecosystem that takes sideloaded books and KOReader easily. Everything below trades one of those away.

• Kobo Libra Colour. The upsell within Kobo’s own range. Bigger 7-inch screen, physical page-turn buttons, waterproofing, stylus support and a colour panel. Same open ecosystem. Choose it if you want any of those features and do not mind the extra size and cost.
• Basic Kindle (11th generation). The Clara BW’s closest rival on price and size — also a 6-inch reader. It has a warm light too now, but no waterproofing, and it is tied to Amazon, so sideloading means conversion and KOReader means jailbreaking. Choose the Clara BW to keep your library open; choose the basic Kindle if you buy from Amazon and want that to be seamless.
• Kindle Paperwhite. A step up from the basic Kindle: 7-inch, waterproof, more storage. Still black-and-white, still no buttons, still Amazon’s closed ecosystem. Compare it to the Libra Colour rather than the Clara BW if size and water resistance matter.
