The Scribe is a large writing tablet that is also a full Kindle. That combination is its whole case: if you want Amazon’s store and library on the same device you take notes on, nothing else does both as well.

• reMarkable Paper Pro. The Scribe’s direct rival as a writing device, and the better one for writing alone — a bigger 11.8-inch screen, a front light, colour, more paper-like feel, deeper note organisation, and open export (PDF, PNG, SVG) with third-party sync. But it is a weak ebook reader: no Kindle or Kobo store, awkward EPUB handling, and a subscription for full cloud features. Choose the reMarkable if writing is the point and reading is secondary; choose the Scribe if you want one device for Kindle books and notes.
• Kindle Paperwhite. The question of whether you need a large device at all. The Paperwhite is a 7-inch waterproof reader with no pen, at a fraction of the price and weight. If you do not actually write or read many PDFs, it is the better everyday Kindle. Choose the Scribe only if the pen and the big screen earn their place.
• Kobo Sage. Kobo’s writing-capable reader — 8-inch, has page-turn buttons, waterproof, takes a stylus, and runs in an open ecosystem where sideloading and KOReader are easy. Its note-taking is more basic than the Scribe’s. Choose the Sage if you want light note-taking plus an open reader; choose the Scribe for serious note-taking inside Amazon’s world.
