Managing your library and sending books with Calibre.
Calibre is the free desktop program most people use to keep an ebook library in order and copy books onto a reader. With the Scribe it works over USB out of the box, and can also send books to your Kindle email address.
What to know
- Send AZW3, not EPUB. The Scribe does not read EPUB copied over by cable. Calibre converts to AZW3 automatically when it sends to a Kindle and keeps your EPUB copy.
- Send PDFs unchanged. Do not convert PDFs for the Scribe. Its 10.2-inch screen shows a full-size page well, and converting a PDF to a Kindle format usually makes it worse. Calibre copies PDFs across as-is.
- KFX is optional. The community “KFX Output” plugin gives slightly better typography for reflowable books. AZW3 is fine for most reading; add KFX only if you want its features.
- Notebooks are not in Calibre’s reach. Calibre manages books you send to the Scribe. The handwritten notebooks live in Amazon’s system and are exported by email, not through Calibre.
