Kindle (11th generation)

Comparisons

How this device stacks up against the alternatives.

The entry Kindle’s case is simple: the cheapest way into Amazon’s ecosystem, on a sharp 6-inch screen. Everything below adds something for more money.

  • Kindle Paperwhite. The obvious upsell within Kindle: a larger 7-inch screen, a warm light, water resistance and more storage. If any of those matter, the Paperwhite is worth the difference. If you just want to read text and price is the priority, the entry Kindle does that fine.
  • Kobo Clara BW. The entry Kindle’s closest rival on price and size — also a 6-inch reader, and it has a warm light, which the basic Kindle does not. The real difference is the ecosystem: the Clara BW takes sideloaded EPUB and KOReader easily, while the Kindle means conversion and jailbreaking. Choose the Kindle if you buy from Amazon; choose the Clara BW to keep your library open.
  • Kobo Libra Colour. A step further up: 7-inch, colour, physical page-turn buttons, waterproof, stylus, open ecosystem. Compare it to the Paperwhite rather than the entry Kindle unless budget is no object.
