The Palma 2 runs the real Kindle, Kobo, Libby, read-it-later and RSS apps, which is the point of a phone-shaped e-ink device — long-form reading without an LCD. Each app needs two rounds of setup: its own account and settings, and BOOX’s per-app optimisation panel. On the small screen, the DPI setting is especially worth adjusting so apps are not phone-cramped.

  1. Decide what you want it for

Because it is phone-shaped, people use the Palma 2 for more than books. Common picks are the Kindle and Kobo apps for store books, Libby for library loans, a general reader such as Moon+ Reader for your own files, and — the reason many buy it — a read-it-later app (Readwise Reader, Pocket, Instapaper) or an RSS reader for long-form articles without a bright phone screen. KOReader has its own section.

  2. Install from the Play Store

Open the Play Store, search, and install as on a phone. If an app is missing, try the Play Store website in the browser, or sideload the APK from the developer's site.

  3. Open the app once, then open BOOX's per-app settings

Launch the app so Android registers it. Then, from the Apps screen or the control centre, open its BOOX "optimisation" panel. This dialog controls how the app looks and behaves on e-ink.

  4. Set the display and refresh options per app

For a text reading or article app choose a clean refresh mode (Regal or Normal), turn on "bleach" or "enhance contrast" only if text looks grey, and enable "full refresh on page turn" if you see heavy ghosting. For a scrolling app (RSS, a feed), a faster mode is more comfortable with full refresh every few screens.

  5. Fix the DPI for the small screen

Many apps assume a larger phone and look cramped on the 6.13-inch screen. Nudge the app's DPI in the optimisation panel until buttons and text are a comfortable size, then reopen the app.

  6. Control background behaviour

Under Settings, then "Power", restrict apps you open only occasionally so they do not sync in the background and drain the battery. Keep the one or two you use constantly exempt.

  7. Turn off in-app animations

In each app's own settings, turn off page-turn animations, scrolling effects and auto-brightness, and set a plain light theme.
