The Navigation Ball turns a menu dive into one tap, and on a screen this size its best use is a fast full-screen refresh plus Back and Home so you are not reaching across the glass. Set that up first, configure the edge swipes for moving around Android, and make sure neither interferes with the pen when you are writing near the edge.

  1. Turn on the Navigation Ball

Open Settings, then look for "Navigation Ball" (sometimes under "Function settings" or the control centre). Enable it. A small circular button appears floating over whatever app you are in; drag it to a corner within thumb reach.

  2. Choose what its shortcuts do

Tapping the ball fans out a ring of shortcuts. Set them to the actions you reach for most — full-screen refresh (clears ghosting), Back, Home, recent apps, a colour/black-and-white toggle, and a brightness or refresh-mode control. You usually get four to nine slots.

  3. Set the full-refresh shortcut first

The single most useful shortcut is "refresh" or "full-screen refresh". Ghosting builds up in any app and is more visible on the colour screen; a one-tap clear from the ball beats opening the control centre every time.

  4. Set up edge-swipe gestures

Under Settings, then "Gesture" (or "Function settings"), assign swipes from the left, right and bottom edges. On a 10.3-inch screen these matter more than on a small reader — swipe up from the bottom for recent apps or the control centre, swipe from the left edge for Back, so you are not stretching to on-screen buttons.

  5. Keep gestures clear of the writing area

In BOOX Notes and any drawing app, edge swipes can be mistaken for pen strokes near the border. Either keep a margin, or use the app's palm- rejection and "disable gestures while writing" option.

  6. Hide the ball when writing or in full-screen apps

The ball gets in the way in a note app or browser. It has an auto-hide/opacity option, and you can toggle it off quickly from the control centre when you need the whole screen.
