BOOX Go Color 7
Comparisons
How this device stacks up against the alternatives.
The Go Color 7’s case is flexibility: full Android, the Play Store, any reading app, a microSD slot, and no store lock-in. The trade-off is that it takes setup to look and behave like a good e-reader, and its standby battery life is shorter than a dedicated reader’s.
- Kobo Libra Colour. The closest comparison — also 7-inch, colour, with page-turn buttons — but a dedicated reader, not Android. It works well out of the box, is waterproof, and has far better standby. It cannot run the Kindle app or arbitrary apps. Choose the Libra Colour if you want it to just work and mostly live in the Kobo or KOReader world; choose the Go Color 7 if you need the Kindle app, Libby, or apps in general on one device.
- Kobo Clara BW. Smaller, cheaper, black-and-white, no buttons, no Android. A simple, long-lasting plain reader. Choose it if you want the opposite of the Go Color 7 — nothing to configure.
- Kindle Paperwhite. A locked 7-inch Amazon reader, waterproof, with the best standby of the four. Choose it only if you buy from the Kindle store and want simplicity. The Go Color 7 can run the Kindle app and everything else besides.
